Variable Air Volume (VAV) is an air-distribution approach that holds supply-air temperature roughly constant while varying the volume of air delivered to match the cooling load, using variable-speed fans and modulating dampers or terminals. It saves substantial fan energy at part load compared with constant-volume systems. In data centers VAV control lets air handlers and containment airflow track IT heat load precisely, cutting fan power and over-cooling.
