A shared digital representation of a building's physical and functional characteristics.
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a process and a technology for creating intelligent 3D models that contain not only geometry, but also data — materials, performance characteristics, manufacturer information, installation parameters, and lifecycle properties. It enables architects, engineers, contractors and operators to coordinate around a single source of truth.
Unlike traditional 2D drawings, a BIM object knows what it is — not just what it looks like. A chiller block in BIM carries its capacity, weight, power draw, connection points and service clearances along with its 3D form.
Major formats include Revit (RFA/RVT), the open IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) standard, ArchiCAD and Bentley systems. Modern manufacturer libraries publish content in multiple formats to support cross-platform workflows.
