A Hypervisor is software that creates and runs virtual machines by abstracting and sharing a physical server's CPU, memory and I/O among multiple guests. In data centers it underpins server virtualization, raising utilization and enabling live migration and consolidation. Type 1 hypervisors run directly on hardware, while Type 2 run atop a host operating system.
