A Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is a deliverable-oriented hierarchical decomposition of the total project scope into progressively smaller, manageable components down to work packages. In scheduling tools it organizes activities and enables cost and progress roll-up. On data-center projects the WBS typically breaks work down by building, level, system and trade, forming the backbone for planning, reporting and earned value.
