A dry-type transformer uses air and solid insulation, often cast-resin encapsulated windings, instead of insulating oil, eliminating the fire and containment risks of liquid-filled units. It is quieter to maintain and suited to indoor installation near loads. Data centers favor dry-type, especially cast-resin, transformers for indoor step-down duty inside data halls and electrical rooms where oil-filled units would pose spill and fire hazards.
