An Air-Side Economizer uses filtered outside air to cool a data center directly when ambient conditions are favorable, reducing or eliminating mechanical refrigeration. Direct systems introduce outdoor air into the space, while indirect systems pass it through a heat exchanger to keep the internal air isolated. In data centers it delivers substantial free-cooling hours and lower PUE in suitable climates, subject to humidity and contamination control.
