Cable derating is the reduction of a cable's rated current-carrying capacity to account for installation conditions such as high ambient temperature, grouping with other cables, and burial or enclosure that limit heat dissipation. Correction factors from wiring standards are applied. Data center designers derate power cables carefully because densely bundled feeders in hot electrical rooms carry less current than their nominal ampacity implies.
