An Autonomous System Number (ASN) is a globally unique identifier assigned to a network that runs its own routing policy and advertises address blocks with BGP. It is the unit of identity in internet routing and peering: operators reference each other by ASN when arranging interconnection, and a network needs one to peer, buy transit or announce its own address space.
