Avoided Emissions are the reductions in greenhouse gases that occur outside an organization's own footprint because of its products, services or actions, such as exporting waste heat that displaces gas boilers. Reported separately from Scope 1, 2 and 3 to prevent double counting, they are sometimes called Scope 4. Data-center operators cite them for heat reuse and efficiency-enabling technologies, though methodologies remain contested.
