A Redundant Capacity Component is a piece of equipment, such as a UPS module, chiller, pump, or generator, installed beyond the base capacity (N) so the system can tolerate the loss or maintenance of a unit. In the Uptime Institute framework, the presence of redundant capacity components distinguishes Tier II and higher from a Tier I basic-capacity design.
