Islanding is the condition in which a portion of the electrical network continues to be energized by local generation or storage while disconnected from the wider utility grid. Intentional islanding keeps a facility running during grid outages, whereas unintentional islanding is a safety hazard requiring anti-islanding protection. Data center microgrids island deliberately to ride through utility disturbances using on-site generators and batteries.
