A Downtime Budget is the maximum outage time permitted over a period, derived from an availability target, for example about 5.3 minutes a year at five nines. Data center operators use it to weigh maintenance risk against SLA commitments and to decide whether planned and unplanned outages remain within contractual and design limits.
