Depth of Discharge (DoD) is the fraction of a battery's total capacity that has been withdrawn during a discharge, the inverse of state of charge. Higher DoD per cycle generally shortens battery life, so manufacturers specify cycle life against DoD. Data center designers limit DoD on UPS and storage batteries to balance usable backup energy against long-term degradation and replacement cost.
